A new 600,000-square-foot overlook area has recently opened near Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT) in North Carolina. This expansive space is free and accessible to the public, offering a unique way to watch planes without needing to go through airport security.

Location and Scenic Views

Situated less than two miles from CLT, the lookout deck provides breathtaking views of the airport’s airfield, the city skyline, and the terminal. This makes it a perfect spot for aviation enthusiasts and families alike.

Exciting Family-Friendly Features

The overlook area is designed to be enjoyable for visitors of all ages. Some of its key features include:

  • Airport-Themed Playground: The playground includes a mini air traffic control tower with a slide and a plane-shaped climbing structure, providing a fun and educational experience for children.
  • Historical Displays: There is a retired U.S. military fighter jet on display, along with informative exhibits that detail aviation history in the Carolinas. These exhibits explain the types of planes that use the airport, the science behind a Boeing 747, and how runways are built and named.

Convenient Amenities

To ensure a comfortable visit, the overlook area includes several amenities:

  • Food Truck Area: When visitors get hungry, they can enjoy a variety of food options from the food trucks parked on-site.
  • Picnic Tables: There are covered picnic tables where visitors can sit and enjoy their meals.
  • Accessible Parking and Facilities: The site features accessible parking, bicycle racks, and restrooms with baby changing stations.
  • Pet Relief Areas: Pet owners can find designated areas where their pets can relax and take a break.

Community and Educational Focus

Jack Christine, CLT’s Chief Infrastructure Officer, highlighted the significance of the overlook to the local community. The space is intended to educate, inspire, and create lasting memories for visitors of all ages. The exhibits and amenities are designed to provide an engaging and informative experience.

Memorial for USAir Flight 1016

A significant feature of the overlook is a memorial dedicated to USAir Flight 1016, which tragically crashed into a private home while attempting to land at CLT in 1994. This incident resulted in the deaths of 37 passengers. The memorial serves as a poignant reminder of this event and honors the memory of those who lost their lives.

Replacement of Temporary Overlook

This new permanent overlook replaces a temporary one that was established after the previous overlook closed in 2022 due to airport construction. The new facility is a major upgrade, providing a permanent, enhanced space for plane spotting and relaxation.

Future Developments at CLT

In addition to the new overlook, CLT is also set to open its first Delta Sky Club lounge by the end of 2024. This addition will further enhance the airport’s amenities and provide more comfort and convenience for travelers.
