A Wall Street Journal investigation claims that after learning that Bill Gates had an affair with a Russian bridge player years earlier, renowned sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein tried to blackmail the co-founder of Microsoft. While Epstein met the lady in 2013 and paid for her to take software development classes, Gates supposedly first met the woman in 2010 when she was in her 20s. In an email to Gates in 2017, Epstein requested payment for the course and hinted that if he didn’t keep in touch with the convicted sex offender, he may reveal Gates’ affair. A representative for Gates said that Epstein had attempted, but failed, to use their prior friendship as leverage against Gates.
Despite Epstein’s prior sex crime conviction and status as a registered sex offender, Gates started meeting with him in 2011. According to Gates, the goal of these gatherings was to collect money for global health programs that complemented the aims of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. But in January, Gates admitted that he had made a mistake by going out to dinner with Epstein and expressed sorrow for continuing their friendship.
Bridge player Mila Antonova claimed that when Gates’ confidant Boris Nikolic introduced her to Epstein, she was not aware of his tarnished reputation. Epstein provided funds for Antonova’s attendance at a coding boot camp, but she was unable to convince him to support her online bridge teaching venture. Epstein agreed to make a direct payment to the school, stating that he intended to use his money to assist others when he could.
Jeffrey Epstein was charged in 2008 with soliciting and obtaining a juvenile for prostitution after being accused of sexually assaulting underage females in 2006. He was jailed in Florida after registering as a sex offender. Epstein was detained once more on sex trafficking charges in 2019 as a result of a thorough investigation by the Miami Herald that identified a large number of additional victims. He was found dead in his New York jail cell while awaiting trial, and the medical examiner’s office determined that he committed suicide.
